We thought we had done the impossible. We thought that we had somehow managed to destroy Thread forever. But as it turns out, we were wrong. Horribly wrong.
For 500 turns we were free. No longer were we menaced from the sky. In triumph we founded a new Weyr. Victory’s End. How fitting. Because it was the end of our victory over Thread.
In the midst of our celebration Thread fell and our Queen Crysanthemuth rose. She and her mate Neroth wove between the deadly spores of Thread.
It was our doom. These two Thread stricken leaders hatched a new strain of dragon, and the world went mad.
Since then, those of us from Victory’s End, and our counterparts at Southern, have felt the tension building. Southern asked for the death of the new dragons, who had already hatched and Impressed. But Victory’s End refused.
So Southern brought disease into the Weyr, as one of their riders, seeking to warn Victory’s End of the horrible sickness, instead died in its bowl and spread the contagion. And now Southern is moving in to Victory’s End, in attempt to flee their horribly stricken Weyr.
But there is so much more to this story than these simple words can express. . .
The illness continues to plague the Weyrs. Dragons and riders fall beneath it, and the keening never seems to end. Few riders have recovered, and as of yet, no dragon has been able to shake the sickness. Blood has already been let, and there is a silent promise on the wind of more to come. Steps have been taken, both for better, and for worse.
